Creative Writing Excerpt
From Otherworldly, my novella
“I have found birds to have a cold and generally untrustworthy gaze. Vasco insists that pigeons are wise and misunderstood, but Vasco also insists he’s never wrong, so I don’t take his opinion too seriously. I grew up around gulls—loud, greedy, and vibrating with constant irritation—and I’ve never met a bird that didn’t want something from me. Even now, as one stares at me from the edge of the boardwalk, I can feel my anxiety churning like a washing machine with a loose screw. Maybe I’m projecting. That’s what Vasco would say. He would also tell me to breathe, unclench my shoulders, and stop assuming every living thing is plotting my downfall. But birds? No. Birds are definitely plotting.”
